Just Something to Think About

I’m going to talk about human trafficking, but not too much. It’s the month after national human trafficking month so I figure why not talk about it now since human trafficking didn’t go away when the awareness campaigns did. Just give me five minutes. Maybe less. A three minute read that’s all I’m asking.

I get it. Really. We all have our passions. Some people’s passions freak other people out.

I’m not going to lie. Deep inside me is this crazy, fanatical lady that wants to jump up and down and say, don’t you see what’s happening! It’s right before our eyes! But then I get an image from when I lived in New York in 2006 of this hippie guy yelling and humiliating this tiny old lady on the subway because she was wearing a fur coat. The look of terror and fear in her eyes I will never forget. I’m sure she no longer wears fur coats on subways, but probably because she cares about her safety and not because she has learned something about cruelty towards animals.

I know all too well it really isn’t possible to put all our energy into many different causes and issues. That’s not what I’m asking. But it is possible to be a more conscious, educated human being without much effort at all. For example, my step-brother who is a big supporter and advocate of animal rights once suggested I watch the documentary “The Cove.” So I did. Why not? And I was profoundly moved. I had NO idea. Am I out trying to actively save the whales now after watching it? No. But because of choosing to spend just 90 minutes of my entire life on watching the Cove, I now do not go to places like Sea World, and I tell other people they should watch the documentary. Who knows? Maybe a big spark will light up in one of those people I tell to watch it. That’s what happened to me after all four years ago. Someone suggested I go to a free showing of the documentary Very Young Girls, and I did. And it changed my life. I knew right then and there that in terms of advocacy/charity/my cause/whatever you want to call it, mine would be human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking, in America. For the last four years I have done local advocacy around this issue and my life has been richer and more meaningful because of it.

So…all I’m suggesting is that you watch one of these documentaries: Very Young Girls (http://www.gems-girls.org/get-involved/very-young-girls) which you can borrow from me if local and/or the documentary Sex + Money (http://sexandmoneyfilm.com). What’s the worst that can happen? You become just a bit more knowledgeable? You recommend the movie to a friend? You never watch the film again?
